Capital BudgetingAbstract: This research examines project evaluation methods related to financial and non-financial measures for capital investment projects as used by Thai firms. It employs a contingency approach to test the conditions that fit both types of measures. Traditional discounted-cash-flow based project evaluation measures such as Net Present Value (NPV) and Internal Rate of Return (IRR) have been in used for decades for capital investment projects. Newer types of projects have recently emerged that make it rather impractical to use the discounted-cash-flow techniques for project evaluation and capital budgeting. These include important types of projects such as social ventures, technological innovations, and non-standard production projects. By the very nature of these projects, their cash flows are difficult to be estimated with desired accuracies. A contingency theory framework is therefore proposed in an attempt to capture the practical reality of capital budgeting practices, using Thai firms as the study population.
The research also uses the critical factor index technique to investigate the details of both the financial cash-flow based and non-financial measures for project evaluation. The aim is to find out the critical measures that are of particular concern to Thai firms so that top management can pay appropriate attention to the right measures.
The research results based on an opinion survey of financial managers indicated that most Thai firms used capital budgeting techniques for the analysis of investment projects (74.1%) and more than half (51.7%) of total corporate capital investment expenditures were screened by capital budgeting techniques. Discounted-cash-flow techniques were found to be used by the majority of the firms with Internal Rate of Return (IRR) the most used project evaluation techniques. Moreover, risk is quantified on individual project basis in assessing risk in investment decisions. Shortening the desired payback period was used most among the risk analysis techniques and the most likely scenario received most attention in the financial justification in relation to risk.
Significantly, the results for the overall responses show the critical area for financial measures is the payback period measure, while the critical areas for non-financial measures are found to be in the customer orientation perspective. The focus on improvement in customer orientation is especially important for small firms and merchandizing firms. With the contingency approach analysis, it is found that firms with high degrees of technological innovation, social ventures and product varieties tend to use financial measures as well as non-financial measures tend to use in high degrees of social ventures and product varieties with 99% confidence level.Curricular : BBA/MBA/PhDM Record link: http://libsearch.siu.ac.th/siu/opac_css/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=27451 SIU Thesis. Thesis. [M.Ed.[Teaching English]]. Shinawatra University, 2017.Languages : English (eng) Descriptors: [LCSH]Basic education Keywords: English Education Policy, Proficiency, Basic Education, Key Success Factors Abstract: This study primarily aimed to explore policy implications related to English education in conformation to the latest government policy, Digital Thailand and ASEAN dynamic preparation. This study obtained three main objectives including:
1) analyzing the policy that promotes English language learning in basic education level with specific purposes to enhance communication skill and strive for self-learning on lifelong learning basis, 2) acquiring best practices from the countries where effective language education policy is being used to enhance national competitiveness,
3) incorporating countries’ best practices into Thai context to propose optional policy recommendations for enhancement of Thai’s English education. This was a qualitative research. The data from documentary study and in-dept interview were qualitatively interpreted and analyzed to draw the conclusion of the study.
The study revealed the following findings. First, the analysis of Thailand’s recent English education policy indicates strong emphasis on enhancement of communication skills and self-learning promotion. The policy guidelines for basic education include:
1) adopting CEFR framework (The Common European Framework of Reference for Languages), 2) moving English classroom towards Communicative Language Teaching (CLT),
3) promoting classroom standardization nationwide, 4) enhancing students’ competency and skills in educational institution nationwide, 5) providing professional development to Thai teachers of English and 6) promoting creative use of innovative learning tools.
Second, the detailed analysis of best practices from the selected countries (namely, Finland, Norway, South Korea, Netherland and Hong Kong) revealed that effective language education policy is being used to enhance national competitiveness. In coupled with the policy, the countries provide essential components including education system, reform, plans, program execution and educational initiatives, competent teachers and autonomy given to schools.
Third, the synthesis of best practices regarding English education policy, reform, and initiatives on key success factors as determined through recent PISA score (Programme for International Student Assessment) and EF English Proficiency Index revealed that their key success factors include: 1) free, accessible, equalized education, 2) small-class size, 3) homework reform, 4) assessment and testing reform,
5) stress on qualification of English teachers, 6) teachers compensations and welfares, 7) ICT in English education, 8) starting learning English in early age, 9) flexibility on teaching methodology, and 10) professional development for teachers.
For policy implications, this study was able to figure key success factors and certain practices that have created direct and indirect impacts to country competitiveness based on recent PISA result and EF English Proficiency Index.
These key components from the research findings will enable Thailand in preparation for competitiveness in this region and educational success at a global level in the future.
For suggestions, future study may consider benchmarking how other ASEAN nations strategize their English education and what kind of initiatives have they used in preparation to ASEAN regional integration. This comparison may give a narrow focus under similar geographical context of how neighboring nations have handled their education for 21st century and measurement to see the positioning of Thailand among ASEAN nations.Curricular : BALA/MTEIL Record link: http://libsearch.siu.ac.th/siu/opac_css/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=27508 SIU Thesis. [LCSH]Structural engineeringKeywords: Structural Engineering, Structural design process, BIM implementation Abstract: With the implementation of building information modeling (BIM) into structural design, existing, conventionally practiced work flows become subject to change. While such transitions are considered an improvement to exiting practices, they may also unveil apparent difficulties of BIM implementation.
Perhaps the greatest innovation in structural engineering industry, building information modeling (BIM) is the most promising recent development in structural engineering design practice in Thailand. Basically, structural engineering design has four stages: pre-processing, structural analysis, post-processing, and structural design. In each stage, there are created several flaws of design steps in engineering design process.
This study investigates current working practices for structural design engineers in order to the implementation of BIM during such processes. Through a qualitative methodology a survey between existing design methods of structural engineering companies was conducted with focuses on aspects of changes such as workflow, time saving, benefits or difficulties of implementation.
Results suggest that, when comparing to the traditional workflow of using non BIM software, benefits of utilizing BIM for the structural design, whether partially or fully implemented, can be found when considering aspects of time saving, information exchange capabilities or error handling. Also intend to encourage the implementation of BIM application and usage for recent innovations in the technology and the future of structural engineering practices.
Since the design processes on each stage are clearly stated by making comparison on BIM, partially BIM, and non BIM process for more specifically to traditional structural design engineers to perform quickly, accurately, and more understand on its limitation, assumption and benefits.Curricular : BSMT/MSMT Record link: http://libsearch.siu.ac.th/siu/opac_css/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=27510 SIU RS. Fuzzy LogicAbstract: Automatic schema matching is a process to find correspondences among different data attributes from either databases or XML schemas. Since there is an inconsistency for naming attributes, the schema matching which is done by humans is the most practical; however, it is time-consuming and incurs great expense. Therefore, automatic schema matching process has been extensively studied in the past. Most works still face many challenges such as abbreviation, synonym, hypernym, and structural problems. Some existing works take schema name, instance, data type and schema description as internal resources while other works employ external resources, such as several online dictionaries and ontologies, to increase accuracy for schema matching.
In this paper, we address automatic matching problems by employing abbreviation, synonym, and hypernym lists; furthermore, we propose a novel structure similarity algorithm. Finally, we propose to use fuzzy logic, a novel fuzzy scoring algorithm to increase the accuracy of our system. As comparing our systems with existing works on open data; we find that our system outperforms existing works with an f-measure of 90%.Curricular : BSCS/MSIT Record link: http://libsearch.siu.ac.th/siu/opac_css/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=27511 SIU Thesis.
