Title : School Nurses' Experiences and Perceptions of : Healthy Eating School Environments Material Type: printed text Publication Date: 2017 Article on page: p.10-15 Languages : English (eng) Original Language : English (eng)
in Journal of Pediatric Nursing > Vol.35 No.4 (Jul-Aug) 2017 [09/04/2017] . - p.10-15Keywords: School nurses, Health promotion in schools, Healthy eating school environments, Farm to School programs. Abstract: School nurses provide health promotion and health services within schools, as healthy children have a greater potential for optimal learning. One of the school nurses' role is in encouraging healthy eating and increasing the availability of fruits and vegetables in the school. The purpose of this study was to explore and describe school nurses' perceptions of their role in promoting increased fruit and vegetable consumption in the school setting. One avenue to increased availability of fruits and vegetables in schools is Farm to School programs mandated by the Federal government to improve the health of school children. School nurses are optimally positioned to work with Farm to School programs to promote healthy eating. A secondary aim was to explore school nurses' knowledge, experiences and/or perceptions of the Farm to School program to promote fruit and vegetable consumption in the school setting. Three themes emerged from the focus groups: If There Were More of Me, I Could Do More; Food Environment in Schools; School Nurses Promote Health. School nurses reported that they addressed health issues more broadly in their roles as educator, collaborator, advocate and modeling healthy behaviors. Most of the participants knew of Farm to School programs, but only two school nurses worked in schools that participated in the program. Consequently, the participants reported having little or no experiences with the Farm to School programs. Objectives: This research aimed to study the implementation of health volunteers in promoting mental health, personal factors, and environmental factors in relation with job performance of health volunteers working in a community.
Methods: The population included 302 health volunteers in Laksi community, Bangkok; however, a participating sample of 163 health volunteers was selected using Stratified Random Sampling. The main instruments for data collection were the demographic characteristics questionnaire, environmental factors, and the implementation mental health promotion questionnaire. The data collected were analyzed using Descriptive Statistics, the Chi Square Test, and the Pearson’s Correlation Coefficients.
Results: The results indicated that the implementing mental health promotion by health volunteers was at a moderate level. The relationship among personal factors, and attitude and awareness of mental health community, were found to be insignificantly significant in relation to the implementation of mental health promotion by health volunteers. However, the environmental factors in the implementation correlated with a positive direction in the implementation of mental health promotion with a statistic significance (p<.01).
Conclusions: There is a strong support for environmental factors in the implementation of all factors. For example, health volunteers should receive training and increase community’s mental health knowledge, supervision and monitoring in the area. Funding and materials should also be sufficiently supported. These can accelerate the implementation in promoting mental health in the community more effectively.
