A metadata application profile (MAP) specifies a set of metadata elements, taken from one or more metadata standards, e.g. Dublin Core (DC) element set and IEEE standard for Learning Object Metadata (LOM), for annotation of metadata, and constrains their usage within a particular domain. With the rapid growth of digital information resources the importance of metadata and MAP is increasingly recognized. Not only do metadata need to be reused, MAPs also require interoperability in terms of accessibility, processability, and interpretability. This work analyzes the key requirements for MAPs and current MAPs representation languages, then proposes an interoperable, expressive, language-independent and machine-processable framework, namely IMAP, for modeling, representing, and reasoning with MAPs based on the OWL and OWL/XDD languages. The former is a standard Web ontology language, while the latter is a definite-clause-style rule language that employs XML expressions as its underlying data structure. Semantic constraints of MAPs are defined in terms of rules, which are represented as OWL/XDD clauses. An application of the constructed IMAP framework to model an interoperable MAP with fine-grained semantic constraints, involving implicit properties of metadata elements, is illustrated. A prototype MAP development environment equipped with metadata validation features, implemented based on the proposed framework, reinforces the framework’s usability and validity. [LCSH]Water resources development -- Thailand.Class number: SIU-THE: SOM-PhD-2014-04 Abstract: The paradigm in water resources management has shifted towards more integration and sustainability. However, how it should be carried out in Thailand has not yet been fully delineated. In order to find out what it should be, this research has sought to diagnose and find the right prescription for water resources management in Thailand, i.e., investigating the current water resources management situation and formulating recommendations on how to make water resources management in Thailand more effective. The research adopted a qualitative approach to acquire insights from a group of 60 expert respondents who have working experience in water resources management in Thailand, with 30 of those experts re-interrogated to determine water management effectiveness in the research site of Phuket.
The diagnosis on the current situation has revealed that water management efforts in Thailand are ineffective and lack integration. Also, the findings show that 1) Thailand does not manage fully its water resources with the notions of governance and knowledge management and 2) Thailand might fail to employ sound natural resources and environment management and to take into consideration the socioeconomic conditions in managing its water resources.
For improvements, the findings pointed out that enhancing Thailand’s water resources management effectiveness could be done via improving governance, having sound natural resources and environment management, having proper management of socioeconomic conditions, and having proper management of knowledge and technology. In other words, implementing integrated water resources management (IWRM) would help in increasing Thailand’s water resources management effectiveness. Nonetheless, the fact that the recommendations from experts with water management experience from outside of Phuket are significantly different from those of experts with water management experience in Phuket implies the necessity of having IWRM tailor made to attain the essential contextual fit.

[LCSH]Retention and MotivationClass number: SIU THE: SOM-PhD-MS-2014-01 Abstract: The purpose of this study is to determine and explain the major factors
impacting on employee retention and motivation to work for non-government
organizations (NGOs) in Thailand. This study aims to identify and discuss the factors
that attract and motivate people to work for non-government organizations (NGOs); to examine the contributions these people and their organizations make to civil society in Thailand; and to examine the significance that working for an NGO has on the
overall labor force of Thailand.
An in-depth interview was used to collect data from informants that are the people to work for NGOs in Thailand. A review of Thai run NGOs showed that they covered a wide spectrum of activities, and ranged in size from small to quite large
organizations, many with a lengthy history of operation. Eighty informants were selected from a cross-section of organizations that reflected the group as a whole.Informants were selected from both the managerial level as well as the operational
level. The sample size was logically and statistically determined with reference to the objectives and scope of the study. The in-depth interviews revealed that NGOs were providing many nonfinancial
benefits to society, including: leadership experience, self-actualization,
social inclusion, self-esteem, and a feeling of contributing to the larger society.Informants stated that their motivation for working with an NGO included: financial benefits, skills development, and a strong belief in the philosophy of the NGO they were working with. Employee retention depends on NGO managers working with their employees to manage these expectations for their mutual benefit. The employee workings in a non-government organization (NGOs) has value addedinto the rational alternative to encourage the increase in manpower for nongovernment organization (NGOs) sector in Thailand. In order to solve problem in the policy level therefore, most of the NGOs in Thailand are working in parallel on both the community level
and on the policy level analysis of the studies collect information that has come from the impact of the policy, as well as the proposal of the solution in the solution together

Foreign spa customersAbstract: This study aims to: identify the levels of each the six English communicative skills of the spa therapists working in Bangkok, namely grammar, listening, speaking, reading, gestures, and cultural awareness, examine the overall picture of their six English communicative skills, find out what English communicative skills should be the main priorities of a potential English communicative framework for spa therapists in Bangkok, and explore the strongest and weakest components (sub-skills) of each English communicative skill as perceived by foreign customers.
Following the simple sampling and purposive sampling techniques, a 5-likert scale questionnaire was administered to one foreign spa customer of each of the 244 spa centers (out of 616 spa centers) throughout Bangkok to find out their viewpoints towards the six English communicative skills of the spa therapists working in Bangkok.
The findings indicated that despite of their good levels, the spa therapists’ six English communicative skills need to be further strengthened. Cultural awareness was ranked the strongest (mean 3.84) of all, whereas speaking was ranked the weakest (mean 3.70).
In addition, due to the respondents from the ten regions of the world, the potential English communicative framework for spa therapists in Bangkok varies according to their viewpoints, needs, and expectations. However, from an overall perspective, the potential English communicative framework for spa therapists working in Bankok should include speaking, listening, and grammar, respectively, as the major elements. Meanwhile, reading, cultural awareness, and gestures, respectively, should also be incorporated into the framework as the minor elements.

Target language (English, L2)Abstract: In English language learning, there have been some concerns regarding the achievement of the target language among EFL/ESL teachers. One of these concerns is regarding the use of first language/mother tongue in the classroom which has been a topic of discussion in EFL/ESL classrooms. Numerous empirical research studies have been done in different countries on this topic. Almost all findings have showed the same result: judicious use of first language was effective in assisting learners in their understanding of the learning process. This issue, regarding to the use of mother tongue/first language, caused my interest to investigate in the Myanmar setting. The study aimed to find out the effect of using first language on the second/foreign language learning for beginning adults. The study collected data from Myanmar learners of English and in-service Myanmar teachers of English working for private language school, British Council (Myanmar), and Dagon University in Myanmar. The results indicate that using the first language moderately is beneficial and helpful and the teachers need to be mindful in the use of mother tongue to assist students in acquiring the target language. This study offers the strict teachers of English only policy a better understanding of the use of the first language in order to help the learners to acquire the target language, English. Corrective FeedbackAbstract: Error correction is vital for oral communication skill improvement. However, preferences between the teachers and adult learners on oral error correction are different and this affects the learners’ oral communication skill improvement. The purpose of this study was therefore to investigate Myanmar teachers’ and adult learners’ preferences on the following aspects: 1) the necessity of oral error correction on oral skill improvement, 2) the frequency of error correction, 3) the appropriate time of correction, 3) the types of error that need to be treated, 4) the delivering agent of error correction, and 5) the reasons of teachers’ and learners’ preferences on oral error correction. This study was based on triangulation. The subjects were eighty-three adult learners who were studying at two private language schools and twelve Myanmar teachers who taught English language skills in Yangon, Myanmar. The instruments for data collection included a questionnaire and two sets of semi-structured interviews for teachers’ and adult learners’ preferences. The data was quantitatively and qualitatively analyzed. The results revealed both the teachers and students certainly agreed that students’ errors should be corrected.Besides, the vast majority of the teachers believed that the most effective corrective feedback was repetition and learners preferred explicit corrective feedback most. Moreover, certain reasons of teachers’ and learners’ preferences in terms of spoken error correction were significantly indicated in the findings. English LanguageAbstract: In this global world, e-learning is very popular in education because it makes learning easier and more effective. People prefer learning online because it is adaptable to their schedules and it is readily assessable. The understanding of e-learning has increased over the past few years and e-learning is now more widely accepted as an alternate educational medium. In the online learning environment, MOOCs, which stands for Massive Open Online Courses, have grown rapidly in the last 3 years in Western countries. MOOCs offer a wide variety of interesting courses. The purpose of the study is to investigate Asian learners’ intentions to enroll in English Language on MOOCs and their perspectives regarding these courses. The study was conducted at Shinawatra University and online with Asian students. The data was analyzed with SPSS (version16.0). The results show that a few Asian learners have investigated MOOCs. Moreover, most students had little knowledge regarding MOOCs. This study encourages teachers and learners to acquire more information about MOOC and to improve their needed skills by enrolling in MOOCs. Moreover, the knowledge about MOOCs is needed to be distributed in Asian countries in the near future. PollutionAbstract: This research aims to develop industrial management model of industrial estates based on social responsibility evidence from Map Ta Phut Industrial Estate by using techniques of quantitative research for measuring factors related to management, effectiveness of management, and consciousness level on management based on social responsibility. Descriptive statistics used in this research were frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation. Inferential statistics used in this research were F-test, T-test, Mann – Whitney U, and Structural Equation Modeling. In addition, techniques of qualitative research called Ethnographic Delphi Futures Research (EDFR) were used for confirming industrial management model. Industrial factories used in this research were classified in 5 groups under CIPPSET management concept including Context, Input, People, Process, Social, Economy and Technology. The results showed that CIPPSET Pollution Management Model based on Corporation Social Responsibility was an industrial management emphasizing on preventing and solving environmental problems and social effects efficiently based on social responsibility that was able to be used in industrial management for sustainable development. Requirements Elicitation
Requirements Extraction rulesAbstract: Software requirements engineering is defined as all the activities devoted to identification of user requirements, analysis of the requirements to derive additional requirements, documentation of the requirements as a specification, managing requirements, and validation of the documented requirements against actual user needs.
Requirements elicitation is often regarded as the first step in the requirements engineering process. Hence the most important goal of requirements elicitation is to ‘discover’ precisely what problem needs to be solved and to identify the system boundaries. These boundaries define, at a high level, where the final delivered system will fit into the current operational environment.
Without a well-written requirements specification, developers do not know what to build, users do not know what to expect, and there is no way to validate the target system against the original user needs.
Our belief is that traditional approaches to establishing user requirements employing popular techniques such as interview, questionnaire, or even ethnography is at odds with the customers’ actual perspective which in turn leads to so called ‘air gaps’ between developers and customers understanding of requirements.
Hence in this research we focus on addressing this customer/developer air gap problem by developing a process-model that transforms user problem statements into acceptable user requirements - with the stakeholders always central to the process - by generating requirements automatically in the form of Use Case and Sequence Diagrams.
To substantiate our argument, we use real world case study from Airline Reservation System and turn the problem statement of the case study into requirement in the form of unified modeling language (use case and sequence diagrams).
