The focus of this literature review was to determinwe if nurse residency program (NRPs) are effctive in reducing the attrition rate of new nurse during the transition from academia to professional practice in the acute care setting.
Background. The Institute of Medicine (2010)issues a recommendation to establish NRPs to support newly licensed nurse in the transition to practice in and effort to reduce attrition rates and meet increasing demand for registered nurse.
Methods. Medline. CINHAL OvidSP and the Cohrane collaborative database were searched for relavant January 2011-September 2014. Key words used were new graduate nurse transition to practice newly licensed nurse and residency program. The search results in 22 peer review Journal article exploring the facets of the newly licensed graduate nurse and the transition from school to professional practice.
