Title : The effect of short films about about mental health and disorder : on preventing stigmatization in nursing education Material Type: printed text Authors: Bilge, Aysegul, Author ; Palabiyik, Ozge, Author Publication Date: 2017 Article on page: p.88-92 Languages : English (eng) Original Language : English (eng)

Abstract: The aim of the study is to determine the effect of nursing students making short films about mental health disorders in preventing stigmatization of the mentally disordered patient. Students, under the supervision of the faculty member who taught the course, worked in groups; each group wrote the script for and then produced and showed the film. Each student performed in one film. Students wrote scenarios about preventing stigmatization of the mentally disordered patient after receiving theoretical education about this topic. The films were completed in a month. Short films made by students were evaluated based on their titles. The titles reveal that the films were mainly concerned with social problems. It is remarkable that students performed in an empathetic way particularly when discussing psychopathology and that they emphasized the attitudes of the families. Students wrote themselves scenarios, performed role-sharing, and employed visual displays, which showed that they were against stigmatization. This study concluded that short films about mental health disorders made by students have a positive effect on preventing stigmatization of the mentally disordered patient. Title : The Effects of Smartphone-based Nebulizer Therapy Education on Parents' Knowledge and Confidence of Performance in Caring for Children with Respiratory Disease Material Type: printed text Authors: Lee, Jung Min, Author ; Min, Hae Young, Author Publication Date: 2017 Article on page: p.13-19 Languages : English (eng) Original Language : English (eng)
in Journal of Pediatric Nursing > Vol.36 No.5 (Sep-Oct) 2017 [10/18/2017] . - p.13-19Keywords: Education. Inhalation therapy. Nursing. Respiratory disease. Smartphone. Abstract: Purpose
This study aimed to identify the effects of smartphone-based nebulizer therapy education on the knowledge and confidence of parents while performing care for their children with respiratory disease.
Design and Methods
This quasi-experimental study employed a pretest-posttest design using a nonequivalent control group. Data were collected from children's parents who had not used nebulizer therapy for their children previously. Both the groups were given nebulizer therapy education using the same content but different learning methods. The experimental group (n = 36) was taught using smartphones, while the control group (n = 36) was taught using verbal and paper-based
methods. The data were analyzed using the Chi Square test, repeated measures analysis of variance, and t-test.
Results
The mean scores on knowledge improvement (F = 100.949, p < 0.001) and confidence in performing care (t = −6.959, p < 0.001) were significantly higher for the experimental group as compared to the control group. Further, the scores on satisfaction with the learning method were significantly higher for the experimental group as compared to the control group (t = −5.819, p < 0.001). Our results suggest that smartphone-based education on nebulizer therapy might be effective in improving parents' knowledge and confidence in performing care for their children.
Conclusion
This study suggests that smartphone-based education needs to be considered as an effective educational intervention in providing nursing support for parents of children with respiratory disease.Link for e-copy: http://www.journals.elsevier.com/journal-of-pediatric-nursing/ Record link: http://libsearch.siu.ac.th/siu/opac_css/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=27395 [article] The Effects of Smartphone-based Nebulizer Therapy Education on Parents' Knowledge and Confidence of Performance in Caring for Children with Respiratory Disease [printed text] / Lee, Jung Min, Author ; Min, Hae Young, Author . - 2017 . - p.13-19.

Title : A growing need – HIV education in long-term care Material Type: printed text Authors: Siou, Kaitlin, Author ; Mahan, Maureen, Author ; Cartagena, Rod, Author ; Carsone, Soo Chan, Author Publication Date: 2017 Languages : English (eng) Original Language : English (eng)
in Geriatric Nursing > Vol.38 No.3 (May-Jun) 2017 [07/31/2017]Keywords: HIV education.Long term care(LTC).Nursing home Abstract: As people living with HIV (PLHIV) age, knowledge of HIV and the associated care of those aging with HIV will become an increasingly important component of education for long-term care (LTC) providers. This descriptive study piloted two different approaches to distribute narrative-based HIV educational videos. Four LTC facilities were assigned to receive the videos to implement ‘as usual’ or to receive the videos in addition to blended learning sessions where the videos were shown with facilitated discussion with a nurse educator and a PLHIV. In LTC facilities where external educators were provided, a larger proportion of staff watched the videos. However, increases in staff comfort level providing care to PLHIV were comparable between both groups. Narratives of PLHIV, administrator engagement and coordination of online education were identified as facilitators to improving HIV knowledge and compassion in LTC, while fear of HIV transmission and limited time for education, especially when not mandated or identified as immediately applicable, were identified as barriers. From our findings, HIV-related stigma still exists in LTC and these videos may be a strategy for disseminating basic knowledge about HIV transmission and sensitizing staff to the experience of living with HIV.
