ManagementClass number: HE206.2 K829 1998 Abstract: The concept of applying economic instruments to environmental management has been put forwarded as a possible solution to transportation problems e.g. traffic congestion, air and noise pollution time loss wasted fuel etc. in urban areas. This study is aimed to find out suitable econmics measures under this concept to sustainable solve transportation problems in Bangkok which is ranged ampng the worst in the world. The study is mainly theoretical research yet includes some examples of good practice from other countries Furthermore it also examined the feasibility of the proposed measure by conducting a survey on opinion of Bangkok's residents. For this study the samples are Graduate students of National Institute of Decvelopment Administration, to whom could be referred as middle calss of Bangkok's Society and come from various areas in around Bangkok. This research suggests the transportation direct demand management of area pricing scheme comprised of three main measure: 1. increase annual license plate tax to all private motor vehicle registered in Bangkok 2. charge fees for private motor vehicles registered outsidee Bangkok whenthey enter or use Bangkok sres and 3. subsidy to public trasport systems especially public buses. These measure are different from the conventional supplyside management or indirect management that seeen to relieve the problems only temporarily.
