While such transitions are considered an improvement to exiting practices, they may also unveil apparent difficulties of BIM implementation.
Perhaps the greatest innovation in structural engineering industry, building information modeling (BIM) is the most promising recent development in structural engineering design practice in Thailand. Basically, structural engineering design has four stages: pre-processing, structural analysis, post-processing, and structural design. In each stage, there are created several flaws of design steps in engineering design process.
This study investigates current working practices for structural design engineers in order to the implementation of BIM during such processes. Through a qualitative methodology a survey between existing design methods of structural engineering companies was conducted with focuses on aspects of changes such as workflow, time saving, benefits or difficulties of implementation.
Results suggest that, when comparing to the traditional workflow of using non BIM software, benefits of utilizing BIM for the structural design, whether partially or fully implemented, can be found when considering aspects of time saving, information exchange capabilities or error handling. Also intend to encourage the implementation of BIM application and usage for recent innovations in the technology and the future of structural engineering practices.
