Abstract: | This thesis analyzes of culture on Thai learner of English. The study explored the various aspects of Thai culture and determined what barriers they created both for the teacher and the student based on finding related to the effects of culture on second language learning. A literature review presents an overview of educational reform in Thailand, followed by an examination of the problems the nations still faces.
The study continues with a discussion of cross cultural methodologies followed by an application of this data to Thai culture. A comparison is then made with other Southeast Asian countries that receive a higher ranking than Thailand on the 2011 EF English proficiency index. Based on this study in concordance with interviews conducted with English teachers at various levels it can be seen that in addition to improvements in methodology and teachers training, certain cultural shifts will be necessary if Thailand is to reach its desired goal of nationwide proficiency in English.
These finding can assist English Language Language teachers in Thailand in developing curriculum and methodology better suited to the needs of Thai learners of English |
