in Journal of Community Health Nursing > Vol.34 No.1 (Jan-Mar) 2017 [03/21/2018] . - p.1-9Keywords: Community dwelling elderly. fall prevention. Japan. ophthalmological surgery. public health nurse. Abstract: Community-dwelling elderly are likely to fall even after ophthalmological surgery. To identify the association between falls and ophthalmological surgery and screening experiences among the community-dwelling elderly in Japan, a cross-sectional descriptive study examined 159 community-dwelling people aged ≥ 65 years about an extensive physical assessment, health status, experience of falls, and ophthalmic situations. In this city, the study identified an association between falls and both ophthalmological surgery experience and voluntary attendance at ophthalmic screening among the community-dwelling elderly. Japanese public health nurses should be a bridge between community-dwelling elderly and ophthalmologists in the community to promote attendance at ophthalmic screening. Abstract: Although HIV is identified as a family disease, the overall response to the global HIV epidemic continues to predominantly focus on individuals. The aim of this qualitative study was to explore how the role of the family in HIV prevention is perceived by community-based stakeholders. Understanding the role of the family within the context of the HIV/AIDS is essential for community/public health nurses. In total, 34 stakeholders participated in the study. Three major categories were identified namely: fostering positive intra-familial relations, utilizing external resources, and barriers to family roles. The study findings have implications for community-based HIV family interventions. South Africa. Abstract: Despite the need for chronic disease self-management strategies in developing countries, few studies have aimed to contextually adapt programs; yet culture has a direct impact on the way people view themselves and their environment. This study aimed to explore the knowledge, attitudes, and self-management needs and practices of patients with chronic diseases. Four patient focus groups (n = 32), 2 patient interviews, group observations, and key informant interviews (n = 12) were conducted. Five themes emerged: health-system and service-provision challenges, healthcare provider attitudes and behavior, adherence challenges related to medication and lifestyle changes, patients’ personal and clinic experiences and self-management tool preferences. The findings provide a window of opportunity for the development of contextually adapted self-management programs for community health nursing in developing countries. Abstract: The purpose of this study was to identify the differences in suicide risk, meaning in life, and need for life respect among three age groups (young adults, the middle aged, and the elderly) of 540 public hospital outpatients in South Korea. This was a cross-sectional study. Among these 3 age groups, we observed significant differences in suicide risk, meaning in life, and need for life respect according to education level, marital status, living arrangements, type of disease, gender, and monthly income. These findings might contribute to the prevention of suicide in the future and the implementation of better community-based nursing care.
