Political parties in ThailandClass number: SIU THE: SOM-PhD-MS-2014-03 Abstract: The Thai political system has evoled in an atmosphere in which unaccountable factions have regularly acted in front of and behind the scenes to circumvent the will of the people through military coups and other interventions. This has led to the situation in which political parties and their individual leaders tended to replicate the existing models by becoming partician and generally opaque in their attempts to attract voters and indeed in their subsequent behavior However, new communication techniques pioneered by successful Clinton and Blair campaigns, have convinced at least some Thai politicians that they should follow the same path and aim to make direct connections with voters not just through personal relationships but also through the creation of policies that prople might genuinely support. This thesis uses a mostly quantitative research approach to explore these issues. It focuses on a questionnaire survey of more than 400 respondents in for distinct areas of Thailand of voters who took part in the 2007 general election. the four regions concerned were Bangkok Chiang Mai Khon Kaen and Phuket. This analysis was supplemented by qualitative interviewing and critical discourse analysis in addition to the collation and analysis of secondary data. Results indicate that the role of ideology-as opposed to personal connections and relationships is becoming more influential in determining voting intentions and that political communications is playing a role in this both in terms of the range of individual media involved and the importance of individual media Implications and recommendations are drawn from this analysis. Medicine, Thai traditional.Class number: SIU THE: SOM-PhD-2014-02 Abstract: The aim of this research is to develop a rule-based expert system for skin problem consultation in the areas of acne, melasma, freckle, wrinkle, and uneven skin tone. The system provides pre-diagnosis and recommended treatment with Thai herbal recipes or Thai herbal cosmetics that can be used by the general public. The expert system was developed in the form of a web application for the users to access easily. In recent years, there has been an upsurge of interest in Thai traditional medicine and there are a large variety of Thai herbs available for the skin problem treatment. Spreading the knowledge of Thai herbal medicine should therefore be made a top priority. This research aims to preserve and promote Thai knowledge and local wisdom of Thai herbal recipes for skin problem treatment to Thai people as well as world-wide population. The development of an expert system for the skin problem diagnosis and treatment with Thai herbs is the first step in that direction.
The tool selected for developing the expert system is a software program written in the PHP language. MySQL database is used to work together with PHP for building database of the expert system. The system is web-based and can be reached from anywhere with Internet access.
The developed expert system gave recommendations on the skin problem treatment with Thai herbal recipes and Thai herbal cosmetics based on 546 rules derived from primary and secondary sources. The system had been tested by 50 users consisting of dermatologists, Thai traditional medicine doctors, and general users. The developed system was considered good for learning and consultation.
The present work showed how such a scattered body of traditional knowledge as Thai traditional medicine and herbal recipes could be collected, organized and made accessible to users and interested parties. The expert system developed herein should contribute in a meaningful way towards preserving the knowledge and helping promote the use of Thai traditional medicine as a practical alternative medicine for the treatment of illnesses

ELT Journal.Class number: SIU THE: SOLA-MTEIL-2014-01 Abstract: Journals are effective platforms for the exchange of ideas. In Thailand, English language teaching (ELT) journals have an important role to play in getting local research published and in introducing international ideas to a Thai audience. ELT research is an area that receives a lot of attention but, to date, there has never been an examination of the topics, authors responsible for research and the references used in articles published in Thailand.
This study aims to identify any changes in these three aspects by examining articles that had been published in PASAA, Thailand’s oldest professional ELT journal, over three decades. By comparing the different decades, this study aims to determine if there had been any changes in the topics of the articles, the demographics of the authors, specifically the gender, educational level, country where the research had been conducted and place of employer for Thailand-based authors as well as references used.
This study identified definite trends in these three different aspects reflecting the transformation of the ELT discipline over the three-decade period. These results provide insights into a little explored aspect of academic research and can be used to determine trends in topics, demographics of authors and references used in the future.

[LCSH]Telecommunication -- communityClass number: SIU THE: SOM-MSM-2014-01 Abstract: Information and Communication Technology (ICT) is a proven and effective tool to promote social and human development in many local communities and remote regions.
ICT are a means of communication with members of the community that have left in search of a better life in term of Social and Economic development in the cities or even in the countries. For some indigenous people, these technologies are the way to promote their culture in other places as well as to access information about related international or local culture promotion events that is happening around them. These technologies are seen as an effective way to start an innovative approach to the educational process and also to promote the protection of their rights. (ITU Connect a School, Connect a Community Toolkit: Model 3; Developing Community ICT Centers for Social and Economic Empowerment of Indigenous Peoples, Executive Summary, 2011) Thus, it is important to introduce ICT in these communities. Many countries have taken significant steps to introduce policies in supporting the rural access to ICT, and the integration of the advanced technologies within a larger national development objective within the past decade (Policy Principles and Toolkit Report, June 2011). To push those policies to complete its goals, a project among others called telecenters projects have been planned and implemented in many countries in all regions, including in Thailand. The example of telecenter project established that would be used as a case study in this thesis is the Chompluak sub-district known as the ICT Community Learning Centre.
The research objectives of this study are about development of ICT environment in Chompluak sub-district (especially the telecenter), and the community awareness and adoption of ICT in their daily life which also includes the use and their attitude towards ICT. Moreover, the researcher aims to investigate the progression of the telecenter administrative organization by in-depth interview of the managerial team at Chompluak administrative organization and interview people in community.
In addition, ICT equipment and applications used by the community were also studied such as the penetration of internet description per household since the telecenter have been established. At the end, this study is expected to formulize the relationship between the ICT penetration rate indicators (penetration of telephone line, cellular and internet) as a result from the MDGs - Promotion of partnerships of the development of theglobal community targeting on 8F: In cooperation with the private sector, make available the benefits of new technologies, especially information and communications.
The ICT telecenters seems to be like a bridge for connecting unconnected areas in a digital’s world. Nowadays, ICT continue to grow at an extraordinary pace and become a crucial tool among other tools for a policy-maker, regulators, private sectors, and nongovernment organizations (NGOs) to use in means of social and economic development of the country. However, all stakeholders with regard to such development should establish strong policy; clear rules and valuable guidance’s to community and most important of all to provide knowledge to people so that they can be aware of the benefits of ICT in term of services, applications, and technologies that can contribute greatly to their daily life. On the other hand, all stakeholders should also provide knowledge to people to know on the other aspect of ICT and guide them on how to avoid using ICT in an illegal manner.Curricular : MSM Record link: http://libsearch.siu.ac.th/siu/opac_css/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=24132 SIU Thesis. Machine learning.Class number: SIU THE: SOIT-MSIT-2014-01 Abstract: E-mail is a method of communication by sending and receiving digital messages among senders and recipients. Emails play a significant role in almost everyones’ daily activities. Typically users receive 20 to 30 or more messages per day and as the number of emails increase, users could unavoidably face an information overload which induces negative effects on the way users manage and organize their emails. Although, there are number of tools available for manual email management which focus on filtering messages by keyword, sender, etc., many of them are not very effective and troublesome to setup for novice users. This study focuses on email classification through grouping of messages based on their subjects and contents. The classification algorithms: the Supported Vector Machines (SVM) and Naïve Bayesian (NB) with kernel machines are studies and investigated. The study results reveal that SVM has a better performance than NB in both accuracy level and total computational time. They play a major role in the determination of a company’s overall profitability. With today’s fast changing business dynamics and increased in competition, it is reasonable for the management to deal with this overhead in order to maintain a good profitability margin for survival and growth.
This study explores beverages distributor industry in Thailand and what role the awareness of Custom Software for Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) plays in its success in Employee Productivity enhancement.
An inductive approach was utilised as a methodology for determining Employee Productivity enhancement as it related to the awareness. The resulting qualitative analysis of that data addresses issues of enhancing and maintaining Employee Productivity, providing competitiveness across the beverage distribution industry and maintain a good profitability margin for survival and growth. This ability to provide competitiveness and Employee Productivity enhancement was not well optimised in the past.
A qualitative analysis of data collected in this study provided a grounded theory to support the awareness of Custom Software for Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) in a Thai distribution industry to enhance Employee Productivity.

Computer software.Class number: SIU RS: SOIT-MSIT-2014-01 Abstract: Much previous software engineering research is characterized by overly complex, heavyweight, solutions that are off little practical use. However researchers are increasingly focusing on solutions that are lightweight, and simple enough to be adopted in practice. Agile Methods (AM) such as Feature Driven Development, eXtreme Programming and Scrum are notable examples. Their benefits are attractive to software engineers increasingly challenged to deliver software that is both dependable (reliable, secure, available, etc.) and capable of rapid change or reconfiguration in an increasingly volatile business environment.
Until recently, the thought of applying Agile Methods to High Integrity Software Systems was unthinkable. We cannot expect industry to make large big-bang changes to processes, methods and tools, without tangible evidence of their value; and among the HIS engineering community there is little conclusive evidence of successful application of AM in this domain, while research into the possibilities is still in its infancy. One major challenge is that the AM “manifesto” emphasizes among its core values, “working software over comprehensive documentation”. Similarly another value Agile proponents hold dear is “trustworthy transparency over tiresome traceability”. Yet HISE must often be certified by the appropriate regulatory body before entering service. This normally involves submission to the appropriate regulatory authority of a dependability case (a reasoned argument that the system is acceptably secure/reliable/safe to operate), typically including claims and supporting evidence of adherence to appropriate standards. Such standards like DO178b, EN-50128 and IEC 61508 mandate production of certain documentation, and, traceability between these artifacts; all incidentally also recommend use of Formal (mathematical development) Methods, including CSP, LOTOS, Temporal Logic, VDM, Z and B, methods at best seen as orthogonal and at worst opposing to an Agile approach.
This research aims to modify Scrum to incorporate the fundamental (heavyweight) needs of engineering high integrity systems, while retaining the lightweight ‘touch’ of Agile Methods. In particular we devise a method for integrating tools supporting the varied range of development and assessment notations and techniques (including Formal Methods) used by HIS engineers, while enabling generation of cross tool traceability links between artifacts.

IMAP.Class number: SIU THE: SOIT-PhD-2014-01 Abstract: Metadata are machine-processable data for describing and managing other data, normally as digital objects or resources, such as learning objects, photographs, and digitized heritages. A metadata application profile (MAP) specifies a set of metadata elements, taken from one or more metadata standards, e.g. Dublin Core (DC) element set and IEEE standard for Learning Object Metadata (LOM), for annotation of metadata, and constrains their usage within a particular domain. With the rapid growth of digital information resources the importance of metadata and MAP is increasingly recognized. Not only do metadata need to be reused, MAPs also require interoperability in terms of accessibility, processability, and interpretability. This work analyzes the key requirements for MAPs and current MAPs representation languages, then proposes an interoperable, expressive, language-independent and machine-processable framework, namely IMAP, for modeling, representing, and reasoning with MAPs based on the OWL and OWL/XDD languages. The former is a standard Web ontology language, while the latter is a definite-clause-style rule language that employs XML expressions as its underlying data structure. Semantic constraints of MAPs are defined in terms of rules, which are represented as OWL/XDD clauses. An application of the constructed IMAP framework to model an interoperable MAP with fine-grained semantic constraints, involving implicit properties of metadata elements, is illustrated. A prototype MAP development environment equipped with metadata validation features, implemented based on the proposed framework, reinforces the framework’s usability and validity. [LCSH]Water resources development -- Thailand.Class number: SIU-THE: SOM-PhD-2014-04 Abstract: The paradigm in water resources management has shifted towards more integration and sustainability. However, how it should be carried out in Thailand has not yet been fully delineated. In order to find out what it should be, this research has sought to diagnose and find the right prescription for water resources management in Thailand, i.e., investigating the current water resources management situation and formulating recommendations on how to make water resources management in Thailand more effective. The research adopted a qualitative approach to acquire insights from a group of 60 expert respondents who have working experience in water resources management in Thailand, with 30 of those experts re-interrogated to determine water management effectiveness in the research site of Phuket.
The diagnosis on the current situation has revealed that water management efforts in Thailand are ineffective and lack integration. Also, the findings show that 1) Thailand does not manage fully its water resources with the notions of governance and knowledge management and 2) Thailand might fail to employ sound natural resources and environment management and to take into consideration the socioeconomic conditions in managing its water resources.
For improvements, the findings pointed out that enhancing Thailand’s water resources management effectiveness could be done via improving governance, having sound natural resources and environment management, having proper management of socioeconomic conditions, and having proper management of knowledge and technology. In other words, implementing integrated water resources management (IWRM) would help in increasing Thailand’s water resources management effectiveness. Nonetheless, the fact that the recommendations from experts with water management experience from outside of Phuket are significantly different from those of experts with water management experience in Phuket implies the necessity of having IWRM tailor made to attain the essential contextual fit.
